SUPPLIES YOU NEED PRIOR TO GETTING STARTED

  1. Medium Flat Rate boxes
    1. Your local Post Office can provide these free of charge, or,
    2. by visiting the USPS website, you can request a single box or a pack (quantity: 10 or 25 per pack) be delivered to your address at no cost to you.
  2. Self-seal plastic bags (e.g., Ziploc, Hefty, or similar)
  3. Newspaper for stuffing (or packing peanuts, etc. if you prefer something else)
  4. Heavy-duty tape

WHY SHIP VIA USPS PRIORITY FLAT RATE?

  • EASY TO USE ― You have multiple options for acquiring the Medium Flat Rate boxes and the shipment can be initiated online simply by scheduling a pick-up.
  • COST EFFICIENT ― The cost to ship one Medium box is $13.45, excluding the cost of any services you may choose to add-on (i.e., insurance, signature requirement, etc.).
  • QUICK ― Domestic packages are delivered within 1 to 3 business days after the shipment has been initiated.

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

  1. Triple-bag material using self-seal plastic bags (e.g., Ziploc, Hefty, or similar),
  2. Cushion the inside of the box generously with newspaper stuffing (or packing peanuts, etc.),
  3. As you place the bagged material inside the box, continue to add more stuffing for support,
  4. Close the box and seal all edges and corners with heavy-duty tape; and,
  5. Wrap heavy-duty tape around the box fully (at least a few times) to reinforce any potential weak spots.

TIPS & ADVICE

  • Experience shows that Medium Flat Rate boxes are best in terms of which USPS packaging option to choose.
    • The inside dimensions are: 11" long x 8-1/2" wide x 5-1/2" high.
  • Although USPS guidelines say you can ship up to 70 lbs. in a single box, it is highly advisable to keep the weight of each to 40 or 50 lbs. in total.
    • Keep in mind that you want to try and prevent the material from moving around much while in transport.
    • Any significant shifting could compromise the integrity of the box and the last thing we want to happen is for any material to be lost along the way.
